Cow hide rugs: yay or nay?

Now, I'm not wanting to start a moral argument about using animal skins for decoration. In many cases I will be the first to agree it's not right. But, right now I have a real thing for cow hides - I know they're not to everybodys tastes (including my bf) but I just can't stop thing it would be a great solution for our living room floor.  I can't decide between the more typical black & white or a softer brown (Btw, the hides I'm looking at are certified from beef cattle.)

Anyway, here are a few inspirational pics I've found to mull over. Feel free to give me your opinions - tasteful or trashy?

Guilty, guilty not-so-secret: I am an on-again, off-again vegetarian... and even in my staunchest meat-free days I still adore cowhides. I think they're FAB. I prefer the paler browns, or the brown and white patches.

(I also adore taxidermied animal-heads-on-a-plaque... so far my meat-lovin' partner is refusing to give in to my longing to have one over the fireplace).

I totally know where you're coming from. I try and avoid meat and when I do I only eat free-range but then I can't stop lusting over taxidermy. :-s. Are we awful? (probably)

Do send me a pic if your partner ever gives in to the stags head!

I think I agree with you with regards to colour, the browns seem a bit more subtle and sophisticated than the 'moo-cow' black and whites.

*off to look at hides again now*

I'm just not into them... Maybe its because I live in Texas and I see them everywhere.
